11/16/2008They're raising their voices11/20/2008SOUNDING OFF Mary Anne Markley of Carrollton: My vote goes to the Heroes of Ike and the Dallas ISD teachers, students and parents. Why? Because they all got clobbered through no fault of their own. They chose to help others where and when they could. And, with no thought of attaining 15 minutes of fame, glory, and megabucks. SOUNDING OFF Annabelle Brown of McKinney: The heroes of Hurricane Ike – for bravery and service above and beyond the call of duty – and often while losing their own property and possessions. We have had so many "bad" picks as Texan of the Year, let us pick the most honorable among us, the true heroes of our state. SOUNDING OFF Trenton Ray Browne of Dallas: The students, the parents, and the teachers of the DISD who keep their noses clean as they struggle on within a corrupt system. Note that I did not include the school board, the superintendent or the unending stream of various shady characters revolving around the DISD for the sole purpose of lining their own pockets. 11/16/2008They're raising their voices11/13/2008SOUNDING OFF Ronnie Smith of Garland: First, we should all consider buying American-made cars. They are as good as any. Second, if the government can bail out AIG, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, they should certainly help our U.S. auto industry. Last, management should consider a huge pay cut. After all, they are part of the problem. SOUNDING OFF Linda A. Lancaster of Arlington: Unfortunately, in a recession, buyers stop buying things like new vehicles, boats, etc. Simply handing out money to the auto industry to save car-producing jobs does not do a thing to help consumers purchase those vehicles. Where is the line drawn on what industry gets bailed out?SOUNDING OFF Dorothy Ivey of Dallas: In all of my 80-plus years, I have never bought a foreign-made car. My husband and I have owned Oldsmobiles, Pontiacs, Buicks, Fords and a Dodge or two. If everyone else had been this kind of shopper, we would not need to do anything. However, the government and the industry should work together to keep our auto-makers in business, even if it means limiting imports.
